Data Matrix Scanner
Read a Data Matrix code (ECC 200, ISO/IEC 16022) from a photo or with your camera. Your image never leaves your device.
Point at the code and it reads itself.
JPG, PNG or WebP. HEIC photos can't be read.
Or drop or paste an image here.
Your image never leaves your device.
Frame the whole code with its white border.
How to get a good read
- Fill the frame: the whole symbol, including the blank border around it (the quiet zone), must be visible.
- Avoid glare: tilt the code slightly if a glossy or metal surface reflects light.
- Keep it sharp: hold the camera steady and let it focus. Small dot-peened codes need a close, well-lit shot.
GS1 data
Codes that carry GS1 data start with the FNC1 character. The scanner marks them as GS1 and shows the group
separator as <GS> so you can see where each field ends. Copying gives you the raw text.
Data Matrix scanner FAQ
How do I scan a Data Matrix code with my phone?
Open this page on your phone and tap Scan with camera, then allow camera access and frame the whole code with its white border. It reads automatically and beeps when it has the code. You can also tap Open a photo to read a picture from your gallery.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The image or camera feed is decoded by your browser on your own device, using a WebAssembly build of the open-source ZXing library. Nothing is sent to a server.
Why won't my Data Matrix code scan?
The usual causes are glare, a code that is too small or out of focus, and a missing quiet zone (the blank border around the symbol). Get closer, tilt the code to avoid reflections and keep the whole border in view. Dot-peened or laser-marked codes on metal often need diffuse light.
Can it read QR codes or regular barcodes?
No. This scanner is tuned for Data Matrix (ECC 200, ISO/IEC 16022) only. If you need to read a QR code, use a general-purpose scanner app.
What image formats does it accept?
JPG, PNG and WebP. HEIC/HEIF photos from some iPhones cannot be read in the browser; save the photo as JPG or PNG, or use the camera instead.
